3 DIY Remedies to Help Your Skin During Transition

Transition can be a hard time for your skin. These are 3 homemade remedies that help me to keep my skin in good condition.

Ance. Puffiness. Redness. Scar Care… It’s all part of transition for many of us. Our hormones are in flux, sometimes our stress levels are up, and maybe there’s even healing from surgery tossed into the mix.

I’ve struggled with acne since I was a kid, but surprisingly… it wasn’t too bad when I started testosterone. Still, I have breakouts and my skin gets irritated. To counteract this, I use a lot of homemade products to help.

Below are some of my favorite at home solutions. These are recipes that I’ve tested over time and played with. All of them are flexible and versatile. You can use some or all of the ingredients included.

Please note: I am not a doctor, dermatologist, or nutritionist. All items used in the recipes are food grade, which means they can be used externally or consumed. They are safe for the majority of people. But, if you are hesitant… always consult a doctor or do research first.

Detox Face Mask

Great for detoxifying the skin and reducing inflammation.


  • 3 spoonfuls French Green Clay (required)

  • 1 spoonful Alma Powder

  • 1 Tsp Zinc Oxide Powder

  • 1 Tsp Chamomile Powder

  • 1/2 Tsp Parsley Powder


  1. Stir everything together and store in an airtight container.

  2. When ready to apply, spoon a little into a separate container and mix with water until a thick paste is formed. *Optional, mix in a little Manuka Honey.

  3. Apply to your face for 7-10 minutes.

  4. Wash off with a warm wash cloth or in the shower. It takes awhile, this mask is thick!


Healing Tea Mist

Good for reducing redness and swelling. Doubles as a tea and face mist. The tea is excellent for inflammation throughout the body.


  • 1 tbsp Calendula Petals (required)

  • 1/2 Tbsp Dried Chamomile

  • 1 Tsp Fresh Turmeric Root

  • 1 Tsp Fresh Ginger Root


  1. Steep the ingredients in hot water for 5 minutes to make a tea.

  2. Pour some into a glass for drinking. Mix with honey and lemon juice.

  3. Once cool, pour the remainder into a misting bottle.

  4. Keep mist bottle in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Mist face and body whenever!


Rich Balm

I made this balm to use for my top surgery scars. It’s moisture packed and rich, so it lasts longer on the skin. *If using on incisions, only used once incisions are fully healed and scar tissue has formed.


  • 1/3 cup Cocoa Butter (required)

  • 1/3 cup Shea Butter (required)

  • 1 Tbsp Almond Oil

  • 1 Tsp Vitamin E Oil

  • A few drops Mint Essential Oil

  • A few drops Orange Essential Oil


  1. Place the cocoa butter and shea butter in a melting pot on very low heat. Melt until liquid.

  2. Remove pot from heat and add in almond oil and vitamin e oil. Add in essential oils (not too much!). Swish pot to mix.

  3. Pour into an airtight container and let sit until solid. Takes quite a few hours.

  4. Apply a small amount to any area that needs extra moisture. Can also be used as a massage balm on sore muscles.
